Title: Making sense of sound: an introduction to the neural basis of auditory perception
Hours: 8
Credits: 3
Teachers: Jan Schnupp
Program:
The course will start by looking at why objects in the world around us emit the sounds they do, and how sounds are propagated. After a brief and intuitive review of a few key concepts in signal analysis, it will then review the physiological processes leading to the neural encoding of sounds in the inner ear. With the 'basics' out of the way, it will then consider a few more advanced topics, such as the judgment of musical pitch, localizing sound sources in space, and plastic mechanisms, which enable the auditory system to adapt to the environment and to task demands.
